The Best Time to Visit North Dakota

North Dakota is a great location to visit any time of the year. I could easily tell you that all four seasons in North Dakota are my favorite for a variety of reasons

Spring

Spring in North Dakota really is a magical time of year. It’s alive with new life and the promise of another incredible summer. By the time March rolls around, Spring Fever is in the air and is all too real for me. really varies from year to year. Some years it starts in March, other years we have blizzards and snow storms all the way into mid-May.

Summer

Summer in North Dakota is probably the best time to visit. Days and nights are warm.

Fall

Fall in North Dakota is the best time to see the changing leaves and enjoy the cooler temperatures.

Winter

Winter in North Dakota is the best time to see the northern lights, sun dogs, and epic blizzards.

North Dakota has one of the coldest winters in the lower 48. With a vast expanse of flat farmland and little tree cover, strong winds rip across the unprotected prairie creating a harsh environment where temperatures can easily dip to the negatives. It is not uncommon to go as low as -40F/C during the coldest months of January and February. Harsh winds frequently pick up the dry, powder-like snow, causing it to blow around reducing visibility for travel. Occasionally, the roads and interstates even close down due to weather, stranding travelers in small towns.

Since moving to North Dakota, winter has been a hard season for me to love. I couldn’t get past the frigid temperatures. But once I realized it literally was a winter wonderland out there complete with uniquely North Dakota things, I started to fall in love with the season.
